I wish to purchase a storm sail as a gift for a friend who has a 38' Irwin Sloop. What size should I get? And is there any information I need to know in order to pick the correct sail? Thanks

Hi Kate, First welcome to Cruiser Log ,

A couple of things you may need to know , 1. Are you wanting "storm trisail" which is attached to a mast ? ( this would be the first buy) or are you after a "storm jib" which is attached to the forestay ?

2. You will also need to know how the existing main sail and fore-sail are attached to the mast and forestay respectively. Eg : "hanked on" to the forestay --- slugs on trisail go into mast slug slide. The Slides on a mast for a boat of that size are fairly standard - need to know the inside demensions of the slide so that correct slugs are attached on the sail.

For a 38ft Irwin, a 9 oz x 90 sq ft trisail is suggested - luff 18' 5'" leech 22'0" foot 9'8".

A storm jib of 9 oz x 80 sq ft - luff 20'0" leech 15' 10" foot 10'4".

Storm sails are best if colour is fluorescent orange.

Regards

Richard

Thanks Richard, I guess a 'surprise' is out of the order here. I'll be in Florida to join the boat in January, so I will just take the skipper shopping for the sail.
