Default Knives aboard

I just was reading an interesting topic in a women's sailing group about keeping a knife on your person. I don't like the idea of not being able to cut away a line in emergency so we have several knifes on deck when we're sailing. What's included? Well, I have an old favorite knife in a sheath on my harness--it is an 80's era serrated tekna diving knife. Not ideal because it is really a dagger not a knife but I like it because it is no-brainer to release it with one hand from the sheath and put it back in. Hubby had a nice Myerchin riggers' knife on him. We also have a big (Gill) rigger's knife tied into the (aft) cockpit, another Myerchin one tied onto the foremast (on the foredeck), and a smaller folding riggers knife of questionable origin tied to the fife rail at the mainmast (midships). And--in honor of Gallivanters' story of using his machete during a tsunami in American Samoa, we keep a machete just inside the companionway door as well.

I liked this post.
Having a knife handy can save a finger, a life or a boat.
Having them around the boat is a good idea, and I mean "around" as you have them in likely places they will be needed.
I always considered having one on my waist the most handy place of all.
