Thumbs down

"A quiet revolution in energy storage has arrived. Genasun's Lithium-Ion batteries bring the cutting-edge performance of laptops and portable phones to your boat in a package fit for the ocean. Compared to lead-acid batteries, Genasun's lithium batteries offer many advantages:"

Genasun GL-105 Lithium Benefits
:

* 70% Weight Reduction (save 90 pounds, 40 kilos for two batteries).

* 50% Size Reduction (two GL-105's fit in the space of one Group 31 lead-acid).

* Compatible with existing equipment and lead-acid chargers.

* More available capacity for equal amp-hour rating (less affected by deep discharges).

* Intelligent controller monitors batteries to prevent abuse and eliminate early failure.

* Non-spillable electrolyte.

* More efficient during charging.

* In pounds per dollar, or kilos per euro, one of the cheapest ways to reduce weight.

But, here's the catch - $3,000 each.

But then you have to add the weight and size of the safe they must be kept in!

The technology is certainly interesting but I will pass on it for now - until they come down in price. They will be great for small aircraft though.

But on the subject of cost, I have found nothing to indicate how long the batteries will last. If they are really long lived then there could certainly be a case for investing in them.

The shelf life of a Li-ion battery is time related--if the battery is used a lot then the Lithium Ion battery is going to bet better than other batteries, if seldom used, then a regular battery would probably be better.

We keep waiting for prices on Lithium Ion batteries to drop but I think its not going to happen for a long, long while. IMHO.
