I wonder if anyone can help? I have recently been advised of some horrifyingly expensive berthing charges around the Athens area of Greece. Can anybody recommend anywhere in the Med that still has cheap prices?

Hello Gary,

Could I suggest that you log-in to our Cruising Wiki - then go to countries, then Greece.

This is an excellent information site, if you don't find what you are looking for, have a look at the other Med countries.

Richard

Hi Gary and Welcome Aboard!

If I took the advice from all the friendly "nay-sayers" with whom I've confided my personal dreams & goals... I'd still be living in the mountains!

I, too, heard about horrifyingly expensive marinas throughout the Mediterranean... as well as the rest of the world, for that matter. But I really wanted to see the Pyramids in Egypt and the Greek Isles so I plotted a course and braved the dangers and went anyway... and on a VERY tight budget.

After we transited the Suez Canal - I was happy to find free anchorages and affordable marinas everywhere we went in the Mediterranean... including a free marina on the southern side of Santorini and a free "Million Dollar Mooring" that we had to ourselves right at the base of the funicular under Thira town. The funicular cost about $3 each way... so I hiked up & down the donkey trail and thus "earned" two cold beers with every visit to town!

We didn't go to Athens so I can't comment of facilities there, but in addition to Santorini, we berthed alongside in Semi, Kalimnos, Astipala and Crete... free of charge. Granted - there were few facilities nor electricity on the docks but water was often available along with a colorful group of friendly and helpful local fisherfolk.

There are two issues at play to discourage you:

1 - the Sad Fact that some people seem to enjoy telling other people things they think they don't want to hear, and

2 - the fact that free facilities don't advertise.

We enjoyed six months gallivanting about the Med - from Suez to Gibraltar and were delighted at how little we had to spend on "rent" for the boat. Sure - some of the world's finest & most expensive marina facilities can be found in the trendy regions of the Mediterranean, but we certainly enjoyed ourselves sharing the small fishing ports and mingling with the locals a LOT more than we did in the gold plated, luxurious, guarded facilities frequented by those blessed with more fortune than ourselves. Although I am confident and mingle comfortably with that crowd - I get more enjoyment from sharing the docks in the company of the local citizens of the places we visit.

We were in the Mediterranean ten years ago. We're currently berthed in Australia and working on our second circumnavigation... still on a shoe-string budget. I doubt I'll ever be rich in pocket but I know I live a very rich life, indeed.

Don't ever let anyone talk you out of your dreams.

To Life!

Kirk

Hi Gary

Indeed the marinas in Athens are expensive with prices comparable to many marinas in France but this is not to say that all marinas in Greece and the rest of the Med are very expensive. Look at our wiki Marinas - Greece and elsewhere there. In general, marinas in Greece have a price structure that the price/day goes down the longer you stay.

As Kirk has pointed out there many wonderful anchorages where you can anchor for free. Also, in Greece most harbors, other then commercial marinas, charge a very nominal fee.

If you have any specific questions, not answered in the wiki, do not hesitate to contact me.

I am now with my sailboat in the island of Samos, Greece

I recently wrote 3 posts on marina rates in a few areas which included a very brief sample of marina rates in the Med. I looked at Croatia, Portugal, Spain and Greece for Mediterranean rates (which tend to be the relatively cheaper countries), and looked for prices at marinas away from major cities.

The sample was done based on data found on the internet, so it could only include marinas that were actually advertising for business (so I'm sure there are smaller marinas with lower prices. I just didn't find them in this armchair sample.) This was not a definitive pricing survey, just an attempt to get a rough ballpark sample.
