Default Need help in the Carolines at a beautiful island Faraulep

My friend has holed his boat at the beautiful island of Faraulep. His blog is on sailblogs - Yarramundi is the boats name.

If anyone is sailing from yap or Saipan - he would be very grateful if you could drophima repair kit that he has arranged. He can't read the comments on the blog so please contact me if you think you could help.

I a sure he would be grateful.

George

Good Luck to Yarramundi in getting the package of repair materials in short order.

Also, in keeping the boat sound with limited leaking until all is well.

I just went to his blog--and it looks like they will get their needed package on June18 via the ferry if no other quicker option comes through. Also seems that they have a welcome to stay there. And a lovely location. And, not at high cost.

All-in-all, it sounds like they will have a great time if they end up having to stay there for this one month period (though they will feel very stressed until they can do the repair to the boat, for sure). While many people cruise with a "schedule" and don't like deviating from it, sometimes you just have to go-with-the-flow. Often it is the odd-ball mishaps which provide opportunity to stay somewhere, get to know the people, and have an unexpectedly good time.

Fair winds,

PS. For those who haven't gone to his blog. It is a serious repair he must do. The flow of water is now very low at 1liter/2hours but the worry will remain.

Here is the outside pic

and here is the inside

Wow, that's a pickle. I'm thinking this isn't a slap a patch on it type fix you got to do. Seems like you'd need to heavily reinforce that skeg with braces bolted through the hull no matter what if you're gonna use that rudder. If there's some good bar stock around or even some hardwood you could get working on that part.

I'm thinking Downwind. Not upwind.

Does the boat have an emergency rudder there that can be attached to transom? Or can one be made? If you can't really reinforce that damaged skeg very well, you might want to have that back up in place anyway.

If you've got the plywood to do it, while you wait on your supplies you might consider the work of building yourself a sort of watertight bulkhead/dam so you can manage problems once at sea.

Sealants for that don't have to be fancy modern stuff. Take a look around to see what's available there for materials. Good stuff can be accomplished with glazing putty, cement, toilet bowl wax, regular wax, any petrol products.

If it turns out you have an emergency rudder on the boat that can be used off the transom, you might be able to stablize this thing, slide the rudder off the skeg to get rid of the loads when you're sailing and just build a seachest around it. That's a box inside your boat with walls that go up above the waterline so it can be full of water but you won't be sinking. If your gonna use the existing rudder, then just having a dam or bulkhead would help you some.

Seems like there was a member here familiar with Yap and nearby areas. Can't remember who that was.

Hope the ideas can help you some. I keep fingers crossed that another cruiser is headed your way.
