Default NY Canals, Hurricanes and Bermuda

Live is not easy...

We've planned to leave Michigan in August, sail to Canada, long St. Lawrence river, spend september and part of October in New Foundland and Nove Scotia and then go south to Bermuda and further the Caribbean.

It seems, that plans make laugh not only Neptune but Canadian Immigration Officer too. Apparently we are not welcome in Canada and they don't want to give us a tourist visa.

Because of this we must leave US till the end of october, and only reasonably route is via New York Canals, NYC to Bermuda.

How long does it take for 29' sailboat to cross the canals and Hudson river? two weeks is enough? We end our US jobs in the end of july.

What is US policy about sailors, whose visas expire? Are they going to kick us out into the middle of the storm, or they can allow us to overstay a few days?

I don't like the idea of sailing to Bermuda in the peak of hurricane season, but we don't have much choice. I've checked NOAA web page

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/G16.html

and it seems, that there is about 2% risk of hurricane during one week passage from NYC to Bermuda in september. That's the risk if we went blind, without any forcast and planning.

What do you think about this crossing?

I've read JeanneP's log about hurricane Hugo, and it seems, that it is possible to survive such event while on anchors.

What are a good hurricane holes in Bermuda? We want to spend there about a month or more, till the end of hurricane season.

Any advice is appreciate.
