Hi all

I have an old model, but new in box without instructions, Danforth White wind instrument. I have made several attempts unseccessfully to obtain info from manufacturers and stockists. The instrument is a wind velocity with 2 scales 0-25 and 0-120 and is about 4"-5" in diameter. There appear to be 2 terminals on the back. I have a sender on the mast top with a cable for an old non-woking instrument. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. I have photos

Hello Mav,

From your description you have the analog instrument with a marked off face (similar to a speedometer in a car) that shows the wind speed, which is generated by a current passed down to it from an anemometer that is spinning at the top of the mast. Like this one :-

So if we assume that what you have in the box is new and in working order - what you will need is a functional anemometer (that matches the cockpit instrument)

You say you have a sender on the mast top - what was that connected to?

Perhaps if you post a couple of pictures - we may have someone recognise the instrument and provide more info.

Danforth were producing wind instruments in the 70s.

Thanks for the info. The masthead sender is old and is connected to an old tacking indicator, not wind speed. Here are photos for any gurus out there. Thanks again

You might like to contact this company :-

They have supplied Danworth White with electronic parts,

Now that we have seen the readout instrument - an educated assumption would have an anemometer spinning on the mast head. The RPM generated is converted to either microvolts or milliamps which in turn causes the needle to reflect this in knots windspeed.

An Electronics Tech should be able to test your DW by a few simple tests.

I have seen wind instruments bench tested using an ordinary fan to spin an anemometer to get a reading.
