Default Paint

On previous boats I have used International, two part eurethane/epoxy paints. I am going to have my current boat painted soon, but because of its size, the cost of materials is quite high. Several people have advised me to use industrial, rather than marine 2-packs, saying the job is as good, the length of time the job lasts is said to be equal to the marine...and the cost is 30% of the cost of the marine paint. Has anyone gained experience using the industrial coatings, who can shed a little light on the subject for me. Wattyl industrial coatings have been mentioned by more than one advisor.David.

Auzzee,

I'm certainly no expert, Mate, but...

a GREAT Paint Job is ALL in the preperation

and the difference in cost between a gallon of premium marine paint vs. an industrial paint cannot be greater than $100...

so why take a chance with applying an industrial finish coat over all of your effort?

In my humble opinion - the difference in cost of materials equals about one day's work. A good paint job can last five years - and a GREAT paint job twice that.

I'd go with AwlGrip to ensure great satisfaction.

Good luck,

Kirk

Hi David, We used the Wattyl SigmaDur. It has only been on one year, still looking great, but it is too soon to really say. We were also told that some of the auto paints are good and that some of them are easier(more forgiving) to apply. Have a look at Nakara in the Darwin Sailing Club boat park. She was painted with Wattyl 5-6 years ago, by her owner, Wally.

Regards, Stephen

The May/June 2006 Ocean Navigator has a very informative article on paint for boats. As Kirk says, preparation is the key to a good paint juob, but quality of the paint is the importance for a good, and long-lasting, coating. There's more to painting a boat than paint, and I wasn't aware of any of the facts they provide.
