The following is an extract from a Northern Territory Police Media Advisory and needs little by way of introduction, except to say that safety must always be a priority, especially so in remote locations.

I hope the victim recovers to continue sailing.

Marine incident – Nhulunbuy

Nhulunbuy Police received a report that a 48-year-old man had suffered severe injuries to his arm in a boating incident at the Granites in Gove Harbour shortly before 3.00 pm yesterday.

The man allegedly caught his left arm in a winch whilst retrieving an anchor on a large sailing vessel.

A number of people assisted at the scene and transported the man by dinghy to Perkins Wharf where police, Ambulance and Paramedics from Alcan Gove responded. The man was conveyed to Gove District Hospital and he was medivaced to the Royal Darwin Hospital last night for further treatment.

Officer in Charge Nhulunbuy Police, Senior Sergeant Tony Fuller thanks all the people who came forward to assist the man.

He said, "It was vital that the man received treatment as soon as possible and the response from people at the scene and at the wharf was exceptionable given the horrific injuries the man received."
