Does anybody know if these work??

http://www.shark.co.za/repel.htm

is there anything else out there that people have used that are effective??

this would be pretty handy for defouling at sea, or anything else that necisitates getting in questionable water.

thanks,

J

I never trust distributor/manufacturer testimonials... and as usual most of the ones on their site seem too glamorous.. "as I stared into the eyes of the beast..."

If there is a third party out there/on here somewhere who doesn't represent the company I would much more trust their opinion.

Suggest you read the testimonials again - many in there appear at face value to be trustworthy.

If that doesn't satisfy - Google Spearfishing Magazines , plenty of links to forums where you might find trustworthy reviews.

hi, I have surfed and dived in Western Australia for many years. In later years I have used a shark shield and thankfully have not seen a shark when using it to provide a first hand testimonial. Spear fishermen have reported they have been of use whilst dragging a line of dead fish behind them but I can't personally vouch for that!!!! Unfortunately we have had several fatal and near fatal shark attacks in recent years, several in areas that had never been considered "high risk".

The best "repellant" I think is precaution. Obtain local knowledge, do not enter the water around fishing activities or where decaying flesh may be apparent (this includes around crayfishing pots), be careful during early morning and later afternoon. Most of the attacks occured where one or more of these conditions were present. Always check before entering the water, large schools of fish and seals are a shark "magnet".

Sharks are magnificent creatures to observe if it can be done with safety.

In 2004, 17 people worldwide were killed in shark attacks.

43 were killed by falling coconuts.

Skip the shark repellent and buy a hard hat.

Saw a demo of it on the Discovery Channel a few years back. It seemed to work. Best do what "Oldsurfie" said. Was working in 70 feet of water when one shark started to circle me. Just one, no big deal, plus it was small maybe 5 feet. Then a bigger one started to circle me 180 degrees from the first one. Now, this is not good. Took the mouth piece out, hit the purge and swam at the bigger one yelling. It worked but don't want to put my self in that situation ever again.
