Hi Everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the correct area to be posting this but here it goes. Does anyone know what software is used to view the DNC Charts on this website: DNC Charts I have tried Maptech's chart navigator and Arcreader, but no luck. Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Join the Navy - see the world. DNC charts readers are used by the military and Homeland Security. Most world charts, unlike US charts, are copywrited so the rights to use them are purchased by the US. Also, DNC charts have more layers - ones that in most cases the military does not want you to see.

It seems weird that they would provide them to the public for download, but have nothing available to view them with. Did someone move my post here, or was I that out of it I didn't realize where I was?

As I remember the updates are not protected since without the core 33 CD set of base charts you can't do anything. At least that is my memory. If you persue they will tell you to use the ENC charts in the US and buy ENC charts from the other countries as you pass thru. The ENC is published, I have never found a public domain specification for the DNC charts. I remember that at one time I really looked for it.

There is a converter, though it is not very high quality yet: gdal with the ogdi driver is indeed capable to convert

DNC maps to a multitude of other formats. I can confirm that it is able to recognize DNC.

Unfortunately it often chokes on some data elements, but getting it to production quality is just a matter of reporting (or fixing) the bugs.

I could figure out the thing through following that link. It clearly states that DNC is a VRF format. Now I could search for software recognizing VRF, which led me to the ogdi driver, and that led me to gdal. Figuring out the correct parameters took some guessing however. You should refer to your chart in the following way:

gltp:/vrf/[full pathname of directory containing the chart, including a file named "cat"]

Also you should put the chart in a filesystem which is case-insensitive, like msdosfs.
