Default When do boats sail north from South America?

Hi,
I am entirely new to this, just have a dream...
I'm biking to South America, and would love to sail part of the way back to the US. Where in SA are good ports to look for sailboats, and what time of year are voyages in this direction most common?

If there is somewhere else I should look to find these answers please tell me, otherwise any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!
christopher

Just go. It will take you a long time to get to South America from Minnesota. A really long time. Especially if you take the time to really enjoy your trip. You will learn to live hard and to live cheap. You will change your plans a hundred times based on what you actually find when you get there. Your schedule will be fluid. When you get there, just go to harbors and hang about the marinas and ask people. Either you will find something or you won't and will have to go to the next city.

Meanwhile, you don't want such a magical trip to be scheduled around getting to a specific place at a specific time.

BTW - you will lose everything along the way, so keep your gear cheap and strong and never mind fancy. Be ready to replace things with what you can find locally in a bit of nowhere town along the way.

I know, I know. I am already 6 months into the bike trip, almost to Guatemala, and something the trip keeps trying to teach me is not to make plans far in advance. But I've gotten very caught up in the idea of sailing home, so whenever I have spare internet time I try to learn more. I just thought if someone answered this I would have a better idea if I'd have to give up on the plan. I have a rough idea of when I will be in Argentina, and honestly if the consensus here was that in, say, November it would be easy to find such a passage but no later, then it would be worth it to me to try to get there by November, even if that meant taking a bus or not going all the way to Ushuaia.

Thanks for the equipment advice.

Six months in you need no advice from me.

I bet I'm not the only one who would like to read about your trip. Are you keeping a journal?

Default Me, too!

I would love to read about your trip. I'd even type it up and do a bit of publishing. Best of luck getting a sail on the way back. Be Safe!

Oh, my. That rocks. I wish I had known earlier. I could have hooked you up in a couple places.

Anyway, thanks for posting.

Default Any luck finding a boat north?

Hi Christopher,

Just wondering if you've found any sailing options northward?

I'm travelling in Argentina and Chile in the coming months, after which I need to head north (all the way to Canada) and want all or part of this to be sailing.

Any tips or info would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Alanna.

Default No luck yet

Hi,
So far all I've heard is from other people with the same question. If I hear anything, I'll let you know. It'd be awesome if you tell me what ends up working for you.
