Hi All. The boat quest continues. So close on so many occasions only to fall over at the end <<sigh>> . Life (a.k.a. paid employment) keeps getting in the way as well! Anyway, does anyone have experience of the Yorktown 39 flush deck centre cockpit? I have read some fairly ambiguous information on these boats -some say they are horrible, badly designed and built dogs, others that they're a beaut to sail and tough as nails!?!? Does anyone have comments on the design? Cheers!

How are you doing on your hunt ? Not familiar with the Yorktown 39 Flush Deck - but to comment generally on Centre Cockpit designs (I have had 2) pros. The aft cabin gives privacy to the Skipper and his/her Sigother. Cons When you step down into the saloon, one will find that cockpit has taken up a lot of space - remembering that one does not spend 24 hours in the Aft Cabin.

Therefore I would vote for an aft cockpit to get a bigger saloon and galley.

Here is a good one for comparison :-

Success!!! (almost)

At risk of counting our chickens before they are hatched, it looks like we have _finally_ found our yacht and home-to be!! She sailed very well and the surveyors words were ‘you are onto a sweet one here’- which, if you knew this particular surveyor is high praise indeed! Finalising the negotiation now (a few things always come up on survey to be attended to) but it looks to be a go!!!

A well known sailing instructor here in NZ has the motto ‘if it seems hard to do you are doing it wrong!’ In our view this motto seems to apply to a yacht purchase as well. This is the 4th time we have reached price agreement, and on the first 3 occasions something always got in the way or made it hard to proceed- either misleading comments, unavailable surveyors, obstructive vendors (when specifically instructed ‘don’t start the engine before we come aboard we want a cold start for the mechanic’ one vendor went aboard 3h early to start it, in hopes it would cool down enough before we arrived). Every time, we felt, and even said to each other that ‘it shouldn’t be this hard!’’….

This time everything just seemed to fall into place. Winds for the sea trial were forecast to be <5kn dying out, a bit light to properly test her out… the wind got up to 10-15 once we got the sails up and we had a few nice puffs to see how she handled (great!)…. The boat was located a few hours away from our home base so we knew getting a good surveyor would be tough… Sure enough our surveyor indicated he was on holiday, but in the same breath kindly agreed to take a day out of his vacation and do the survey ‘on his way by’ (he was traveling by sea) if the weather held… it did and all went swimmingly! The vendor and broker have both been great –very helpful and upfront about things… All in all a very satisfactory experience- and it looks like with the best outcome in the end!

Once again, thanks to all who have provided helpful advice and comments- much appreciated! Now I expect we will be getting into the Bosun's Locker and pestering you all with lots of technical questions!

Cheers
