Hey Drew, Did you know that Thursday Island has quarantine restrictions and that pets like dogs get a hard time there. I had a mate stop in there some months ago and he had to get his dog cleared by the local vet and the dog was not allowed ashore except for the vet visit... cost him dollars as well as well.

I was also told that they don't like fresh veges or meat that isn't labeled or in sealed packs from a butcher etc... not sure about the meat thing but we went round to Seisia instead of stopping at Thursday as we had planned. There was a bit notice at Seisia near the bat ramp about Torres Straight Island restrictions as well.

Might be an idea to call Thursday island... get the facts from the customs and quarantine people there.

Hi Lex
Yep it sure is have done a few visits over the years however if you keep your dog on the boat its fine with a permit
However if you proceed further in the straight it is also advisable to carry a rabies vaccination card as well but never let the dog go ashore as if you do he is to be placed in quarantine 30 days if you enter the protected zone

Thursday Island is in the Special Quarantine Zone
and if you come back in to the Special Quarantine Zone you must contact DAFF to arrange a vessel inspection if over7 meters– preferably at Thursday Island before you leave the Strait

Fresh fruit and vegetables,Honey meat or dairy products or live plants sourced from the mainland will be classed as quarantine risk items they cannot return back to the mainland
once they pass into the Zones

With a dog you obtain a DAFF permit BEFORE entering the Special Quarantine Zone or protected zone

Getting clearance at Thursday Island will allow you to travel with no further quarantine reporting requirements.

you can pass thru the straight and thru the zones but do not stop and you are ok as well

Just rocking up with a Dog is not a good idea

Hello there Drew,

Listen I'm interested in the passage from the Whitsundays to the Solemn Islands, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. I am a 25 year old teacher/musician/artisan from the Southern Highlands NSW, as it is I'm planning a world randonneur from Australia to Europe first stop Indonesia. So if there is space for a cycling troubador on deck then I'd love to hear from you 0423588809.

Kindest Regards,
Aaron Wales.
