While sailing through the San Blas islands off the coast of Panama in September 2008, S/V Electric Leopard encountered a young Kuna indian girl with a cleft lip. Months later, through the help of many other sailors in the area, we were able to locate this girl and her family again, and put them in contact with
Operation Smile.
When this great group of sailors located the family, a second Kuna girl with a cleft lip was also discovered living on the same island.
We hope that the sailing community will now step forward to help contribute to Operation Smile to defray the costs of the surgery for these two girls.
For all of those who have been to the San Blas, here is a way to give back to the people who welcomed you with open arms. Indeed, it is a perfect way for any cruiser to show support for altruism in the sailing community.
