Hello all. Just a newbie question. Well for starters, I have never sailed, but am interisted in the hobby/lifestyle. I plan on taking some classes, and assuming I enjoy it, I was curious as to the pragmatism of living-aboard a boat on a perminant basis. I live in the SF bayarea, and home prices here are around 500,000 for your average 1200 ft 3 bedroom house. Thats rediculous. Me and my gf have always loved the water, and absolutly refuse to leave it, so I am drawn to living-aboard. I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Sailing down to mexico or the carribean just in your own home just sounds like so much fun to! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Live-aboard, we intend to do just that starting later this year (someone buy my house) and are realy looking forward to the experience. Our boat "Ucinga" is berthed in Hout Bay Marina Cape Town and after mucho money we are ready to make the move. Although we are intending to cruise where the want takes us (no laid down plan) our intention is to try and do a circumvention (just learnt to spell that).

It's becoming rather obvious that I have to stop spending as I am buying thingies all the time.......and probably will never use most of them.

I moved aboard my Challenger40 ketch,this last summer and love it. I too am amazed at the cost of dirt dwelling, and chose the wet life. I am preparing "Evenstar" for cruising in (Target) about 2 years. I'm really not looking forward to the motel while I repower over the next couple of weeks. Can't wait to stow the dock lines.

Think about all the benefits of living aboard, no rates, no electricity, no morgage(uasually not anyhow), great people , and if you dont like the person your anchored next to you simply haul up the pick and leave. How simple can life be, OH FORGOT TO ADD SOMETHING , no cars, traffic jams or traffic lights and finally there is more than 20cm on the ocean between you and the next guy.

Hi People, just further to the future joy and freedom of living aboard how much are you guys working with as a budget for maintenance?

We may have no rates etc. but boat upkeep paint and bits can get pricy. Then haulouts hardstands etc.

Have started building my Cruising boat a 40' cat, plan to be gone cruisin within 7yrs that is retired etc.

In my Finnancial planning I am allowing about AU$1200(current prices) per month to survive,(that is a simple life) is this realistic or should I be stashing more in my Super Fund.

Hi, my partner and I are live-aboards and intend to travel, starting within a month or two. Although you may think the expenses are nominal, you should be aware that there is upkeep costs, registration, insurance, fuel, passport, visas, permits and food. The larger the vessel the more costs involved. To set up a vessel that will give us fresh water and power to operate navigation equipment and household things like lights and 12v fridge, was very expensive to start with. We have spent most of the money we had saved from selling our house, this means we will still need to work while travelling.
