In a temporary loss of self control, I bought a new gennaker for the Newport to Ensenada race. I should be flying 1935 sqft of red sail next month.

The underlying reason for doing so is ego I guess. There is an older Italian gentleman on our dock with a 50ft racer-cruiser that will be in the cruising gennaker class that I really need to outright stomp ;-)

I probably should have used the money for solar and watermaker....but this will be far more fun.

Definitely more fun, Trim!

I bought one for my boat a few years ago. It's in a snuffer, so I can fly it when single-handing. It's amazing the power that it generates! And with my full keel, it means I can actually sail in 5-6 kts of wind! Didn't have the patience for that before--the genny is only a 110%.

This is what I wanted to hear! I have a full keel also and my boat stops DIW when the wind drops below 6 knots.

I've been second guessing myself on the pruchase because it isn't cheap. However, when I go cruising, I want to sail...not motor.

This will be a 1.5oz matrix design at 180%. I can't imagine having so much sail up. I went with the heavier material since my spinnaker is 3/4oz. I also wanted to be able to leave the sail up in heavier winds.

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for yours?
