It's only a PV-GS39 using Mini-DV. It has a fair amount of features for a 300 dollar camera. The reason I didn't go with Mini DVD or the new Hard Drive cameras is because of two reasons: There poor quality in low light situations, which they are working on, and the fact that they compress data, which I was told by multiple people that it degrades it when you go to edit them on a computer. My question was how it would when they're digital, but they still said the compression-decompression-compression did that. I don't know. What I do know is the one drawback of digital tape is that to do the editing on the computer I have to play and record it at real time from the camera, which is a bit of a pain, since I've been used to just transfering files from my little cheapy DXG, but still, much better quality. My friend Brian and I want to circumnavigate the Sea of Cortez in 2009 and do a film project on it that is marketable, but for this we are going to go with a High Definition (HD). I nearly shelled out a grand for one of the smaller Sonly HD models, but the thing is, the format, technology, and price are going to change drastically in the next two years, and I shouldn't spend any money on that yet. One issue that I'm having is using USB2 to transfer video, which does work, although I am wondering if digital firewire would be a better option. The camera ha a Firewire plug on it, but a firewire cable is another 50 and direct interface card with a firewire port for my laptop is another 50, and even in Oregon where it was tax freee, I didn't feel like shelling out another hundred. In any event, the quality when posted to youtube.com, which also degrades the quality a little because of their compression, is still 10 times better than the SD Card camera I was using before, so I am happy with the purchase.
