Well, the quarter finals are certainly taking their toll!

Australia - out!

New Zealand - out!

Surprise, surprise! Don't ya just hate us when this sort of thing happens! What price now for Fiji surprising the Boks and/or Scotland stopping the Pumas advance?

My guess is that the bookies will be on a France v South Africa final while I'm beginning to see England v Argentina as the next upset (for some!).

Whatever happens now, it's been a great WC so far and I can't wait to see how things develop after today's QFs with the probability of a Northern v Southern hemisphere final albeit maybe not from the accepted ranks of the latter.

Enjoy this one while it lasts - the next one's going to be another four years in the making!

See ya!

England scoring two tries and losing in either of your forecasts? Did you watch the demolition of the Australian pack on Saturday?

South Africa beating Argentina and France fairly comfortably when, after whupping a poor England side, in the first encounter, they've struggled to dominate so-called second tier nations until the last minutes to say nothing of having Habana skinned by an American/Zimbabwian sprinter - was he playing yesterday?

Forecasting is tough and getting tougher but form and momentum suggest that you may well have the Final and Play-off line-ups the wrong way round - even worse the Boks could be playing England for third place - a prize for England and a complete failure for the much fancied ZA outfit!

Can't wait; really can't wait for this weekend and can't imagine what life's going to be like after it - I could, I suppose, ask an Aussie or a Kiwi but ....

Hi Peter ,

I am glad that you refer to "so-called" second tier nations ,

The commentators appear to have latched on to a new phrase and can't let go - all through the Boks <> Fiji match they referred to Fiji as second tier ! Therefore they Fiji were somehow blessed to be matching the Boks in certain departments. Just a look at these 30 Fiji Players amongst whom 22 were selected to front up - 15 of these took the field - nearly all Professional Rugby Players from good clubs in Europe and overseas. Not much different to the English or South African squads in terms of being professionals. Maybe the Portuguese, USA and Romanians who play for fun are in the second tier.

Fiji's World Cup squad: Jone Qovu (back-row, Metro Racing Paris), Isoa Domolailai (lock, Toulon), Bill Gadolo (hooker, Lomaiviti), Jone Railomo (prop, Poitevin), Netani Talei (back-row, Worcester), Alefoso Yalayalatabua (prop, Navy), Semisi Naevo (lock, NEC), Sisa Koyamaibole (back-row, Taranaki), Aca Ratuva (back-row, Massy), Akapusi Qera (back-row, Gloucester), Graham Dewes (prop, Marist), Kele Leawere (lock, Hino Motors), Wame Lewaravu (back-row, Disavu), Sunia Koto (prop/hooker, Marist New Zealand), Henry Qiodravu (prop, Orleans), Ifereimi Rawaqa (lock, World Fighting Bull), Vereniki Sauturaga (hooker, Duavata), Seru Rabeni (centre/wing, Leicester), Seremaia Bai (centre, Clermont-Auvergne), Norman Ligairi (full-back, Brive), Gabiriele Lovobalavu (centre, Marist), Waisea Luveniyali (fly-half, Airport), Jone Daunivucu (half-back, Tarbes), Nicky Little (fly-half, Saracens), Mosese Rauluni (scrum-half, Saracens), Vilimone Delasau (wing, Clermont-Auvergne), Isoa Neivua (wing, Mosimosi), Maleli Kunavore (utility back, Toulouse), Filimone Bolavucu (wing, Brive), Kameli Ratuvou (wing, Saracens)

For me "second tier" is more about money and the quality and intensity of the preparation it affords. The great thing about this WC is that player standards are generally much higher and the committment and enjoyment of (and provided by) the so-called minnows has been fantastic. No one in their right mind, of course, would class Fiji as minnows but they, Samoa and Tonga don't exactly have a big budget and most would have expected ZA to maintain control of the ball and win comfortably.

On the down side, Ireland, Wales and, to a slightly lesser extent, England have demonstrated what can happen when there are problems in the camp and New Zealand have proved that you can have the best squad in the world but get knocked out by a good team applying the all for one and one for all principle - interesting in that that same team was beaten by Argentina in the same way. Whatever happened to Australia is anybody's guess but it does suggest that Martin Johnson was correct when he said that to win the WC you need a big, fiery pack playing on the edge and an excellent kicker!

ZA's problem against Argentina is going to be matching its committment, controlling it's own occassional wildness and getting some control; France's problem against England is going to be putting in and maintaining a big performance up-front against an improving but still far from compelling English squad.

My only concern now is that that the pressure may get to a number of the more fiery players in all four teams and force referees to take yellow, even, red cards with the inevitable impact on the game and result.

Let's hope that it all stays within acceptable limits and that the best teams get thru intact!

Good luck!

No, he didn't. Wilkinson just finished off what the whole team started by turning pressure into points. Not that he played badly but to single him out is unfair when he's only part of a team completely written-off by many before the competitition started and during its early stages.

Not exactly a pretty performance but, ugly as some might say it was, effective and good enough to get us into the final of the RWC (again!). Who'd have thought it? Another week of press hype and a second English invasion of Paris in as many weeks!

There is, of course, also the small matter of the outcome of the other semi which could well produce yet another surprise in a competition alread full of surprises!

Good luck South Africa; good luck Argentina! We'll see one of you in Paris next week!

Well done the Boks !! Very well done the Pumas !

It's a pity that France are not playing in the final as host nation. It would have provided entertaining rugby.

Not expecting ZA to provide any entertainment then? You can always watch the French demolish what's left of Argentina in the 3/4 play-off - not a game that anyone wants to play but France will be desperate to prove that it was a fluke the last time around. In England's case, of course, it's a similar motivation but for the last four "flukes"!!!!

Whatever happens now my pals and I are all having heart check-ups to make sure that we're fit to watch the final!

Going into the final :-

The Boks have scored 33 tries kicked 25 conversions, put over 16 penalties all in an entertaining fashion.

France to date have scored 26 tries kicked 18 conversions, put over 17 penalties all in an entertaining fashion.

On the above stats alone a final with The Boks and the Frogs would provide real entertaining rugby.

Absolutely .... looking forward to the eating thereof!

No idea what England's overall stats are or how many points SA have conceded but who cares? This is about winning the biggest tournament in rugby and, whether South Africa came up against France, New Zealand, Australia or New Zealand in the final, only the wildest or most desperate of coaches would see open, expansive rugby as the prefered starting tactic. Other that is than Henry who oversaw the development of the best rugby playing squad in the world but whose chosen best team failed against an inspired French outfit on the day. I can only wonder what NZ's stats were going into that game!

I suppose that it all comes down to what you consider entertaining. If it's open free flowing rugby you want, you need leaky defences or some means of favouring the attacking side in terms of toleration of knock-ons, forward passes, not straights, hands in, not binding and the numerous variants on obstruction which are now commonplace in the televised version of our game.

If you want a tense confrontation between two evenly matched and evenly favoured sides, all ya gotta do is listen to White this morning - there's no doubt that this game is going to be anything but enormous for both sides - Smit is already talking about what it would mean for the Rainbow Nation and good on him for that

If you want to know who the best team actually is, of course, you have to go to a the rolling world ranking system and there's little doubt who the current holders would be. If you want pure adrenalin and the stuff of which heart attacks are made you need a head-to-head in the biggest competition for the best team game that there's ever been.

Roll on Saturday when, whatever the result, the game will be all the better for this the very best RWC so far - unless, of course, you're one of the bigger islands in Oceania who'll have to wait another four years for that!

Boy, did I get this one wrong! What a game for a play-off; what an appetiser for tonight's final!

You're absolutely right not to attempt a forecast. Form, ability and potential now mean absolutely nothing and the only certainty is that the winners will have earned the title of World Champions for the next four years for a second time.

Let's hope that the tension doesn't ruin the game and that the referee has a good one!

Doctor says I'm probably OK to this last game of an abasolutely fantastic RWC but if it goes to extra time ... !

.... who knows. Hope to see your final report tomorrow. See ya

I wonder if England realise yet that there was more to the final than up-n-under kicks.

Springboks 15, England 6

Well done the BOK'S!
