Here we present a series of Google Earth Images of Marinas and anchorages to be found in S.E. Asia.(Also Northern Australia)

One word of caution :- watch you see may be old - it all depends on when the images were acquired .

Each week one image will be presented with the test :-

Where is this - give the GPS coordinates ?

What is it called ?

How do the facilities rate for cruisers on a scale of 10 ?

Any stories regarding incidents etc. in this facility or anchorage would be welcome

----------------------------------------------------

Where is this ? 6th in the series :-

This is an old image of Darwin's Cullen Bay Marina. The give away is the lock on the LHS pf the image. Cullen bay is a reasonably good cyclone hole on the north coast of Oz. The marina itself is located in a housing development which is anti-liveaboard. Officials have recently imposed a very expensive fee for visiting yachts. The fee equates to each exit of the lock gates which can be almost $400 in some cases.

The facilities for a domestic storage marina are quite good, but for cruising yachts there is no do-it-yourself laundry, very few showers and toilets, no supermarket or shop where you can buy milk, bread or a newspaper. There are plenty of restaurants, a small but well stocked chandlery and a slipway where you can antifoul. There is also a refuelling wharf outside the lock gates where duty free diesel can be purchased.

There is a free bus from Cullen Bay to the city's biggest suburban shopping centre, and Darwin city itself is a very beautiful, modern capital which is generally the last stop before heading north to SE Asia, and the last provisioning stop before leaving the northwest coast bound for the Indian Ocean territories and South Africa.Darwin has the world's friendliest Customs and Immigration officers which is a real benefit when clearing in or out.

Cullen bay Marina is the most easily accessible of Darwin's four marinas. All are controlled by lock gates. In the dry season, April to October, Fannie Bay (Just off the Sailing Club) is a great, free anchorage which is very close to the CBD.

David.

It is a beautiful anchorage - pretty good bolt hole from tropical storms
