Default Ahoy from Vietnam!

Xin Chao!

I couldn't be more excited about stumbling across this website tonight. I grew up sailing in the Virgin Islands with my family and since puberty I've been able to help out on the boats we've rented. My formal knowledge is lacking but I'm hoping that this forum will be a great opportunity to learn and gain wisdom.

I'll be in Hanoi until June but afterwards will be adventuring around SE Asia for 10-12 months with my girlfriend Kristie. We'll be on a tight budget and will be looking for short term employment along the trip. Sailing around Indonesia, Micronesia, and the Phillipines would be an incredible opportunity and is at the top of my priority list. The only problem is our budget. Any advice or experience from budget sailors / crew hands / vets in the area would be great!

Cheers
David

Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are probably the pick of the sailing nations within SE Asia.

You should have little trouble in getting a spot on boats which are day sailing or overnighting for little or no outlay, but cruisers in these waters needing crew will be looking for sailors who can contribute an equal share of provisioning expenses. If you can pull a spot on a rice and cabbage boat, your budgetry dreams may well be served; but if you get a caviar boat it will be reasonably expensive.

Extensive sailing experience is not generally of paramount importance, as on-the-job learning is the norm. But you will need to get up to speed fairly quickly on shipboard terms, the understanding of marine charts, pilotage and little things such as how not to accidentally gybe and rip out the standing rig.

Cruising through SE Asia is relatively inexpensive as food is cheap. Venturing out across the ocean will end up costing you far more than the airfare for the equivalent trip.

A lot of internationally flagged boats leave northern Australia in the 'dry' season, commencing in April. Most are bound for ports in Asia and many will take on casual crew following the various races and rallies which end in mid July. Try to establish a presence at the local marinas and yacht clubs and hopefully, you will get a spot on just the right boat.
Good luck.

Sounds like a great trip! I've got friends who go to Vietnam regularly on business and it sounds like a very intriguing place, with a booming economy nonetheless... I'm sure you'll be able to make some coin along the way.
