Hi there Im Alan and I was told I needed to be a member of this site if I wanted to learn how to sail. Let me give you a little background. I grew up on a farm in the country about 20 miles outside Peoria IL. When I was 19 I joined the army as an Infantrymen. During training I injured my back and spent the next few months as a prison guard at Ft. Benning. After I was told to take a desk job or a medical discharge I chose to take my medical. I went back to IL for about 2 weeks before buying a 1 way ticket to Miami. I ended up getting a job in the Florida keys which led to the next few years of random travel. In the last 4 years I have been from key west to Alaska, to Vermont, and then onto Vietnam. Im 24 now and have decided to find some way onto the ocean. Everyone says its really hard, but my work ethic and people skills have gotten me farther in this world then I thought I would ever go. Maybe it has somthing to do with the fact that I will work for room and board if theres a good view. So im basically here to make connections. I am willing to work my butt of for anyone who will get me on the ocean. Anywhere on the water is fine for me. Im currently land locked in the states. So if you have any tips for me or maybe an open seat just let me know.

Welcome on board and good luck. You just might find that contact you are looking for or a chain of contacts that gets you there.

Welcome, Alan. That was a nice introduction, and perhaps somebody will have a place for you. Of course you increase your chances by making yourself known and seen.

You say you're landlocked. How landlocked - i.e, where are you located now?

There are a lot of lakes in the US, and it seems that even the smallest ones have yacht clubs, youth yacht racing, beer can races, etc. Anything like that near where you live?

Do continue to contribute to the forum, which will give you the posts you need to become a Full Member. That gets you a bit further along.

Okay, guys, I've been in transit for two days. Whose shout is it this week?

Hey Alan! I just joined the site and was glad to see a fellow Illinoisan. Time for us to get away from these cornfields and crooked IL (Chicago) politicians and cruise the blue. Good Luck and keep me updated on your journey to finding the dream we share.
