Hi Everyone,
I have been visiting this forum and others for good information. Decided to join this forum.
My wife, Phyllis and I(Gary) Have coughed up the anchor to go boating again, having just retired from long distance trucking. Although we are not complete neophytes, having spent 5 years cruising the South Pacific starting in 1979 with 4 children, we are older now and have to learn how to sail in a less physically demanding way.
In May this year I stumbled on on our present boat, APOLIMA, a 30 year old 46 Durbeck cutter, after searching for some time. In September we decided to take a holiday from driving our 2 Volvo big rigs around North America. After 3 weeks aboard at Long Beach we made the plunge to retire and cruise full time.
So, winter in the Gulf of Cortez? Why Not!
Hope to hear from other cruisers of all stripes but especially cruisers of our generation.
APOLIMA
Gary and Phyllis

Welcome to the forums Phyllis and Gary. Good to hear that you have returned to the cruising fold.
Make yourself at home - the beers are on JeanneP today.
Happy sailing!

Gary, as a Swede, I am curious. What is a Volvo Big Rig?
I am surenthat we just use different terminology but I don't know what is is. Can you explain please.
Many thanks -- one time Volvo (Amazon P58) owner

Hi Folks,
Welcome back!
Like the Wim Durbeck Cutter Rigged Centre Cockpit Ketch - Good Aft Cabin - good strong cruising boat !!
Apolima Bay, Apolima - Samoa
Apolima from the ferry
Prefer Peterbuilt to Volvo.
Nice Graphics ?

Thank you everybody,
we are still trying to get used to the idea that we will be in Mexico this winter trying to stay cool instead coping with icy roads, -30f blizzards and long hours behind the wheel. The last time we wintered down south was '79-80 before heading to the South Pacific. I am sure we will cope.
Stephen, I am surprised you do not know what a Volvo big rig is. How about a picture!
MMNETSEA, thanks for the pictures. Our boat came with the name 'Nona Dee' but we decided that the original name of APOLIMA suited her better so we changed it when registering her with Ships Registry. Some say it is bad luck to change a ships name. Best not irritate 'Poseidon' or 'Murphy'.
good sailing
Gary and Phyllis

Ah, it is a question of terminology.
Sure I know what a Volvo dragbil (Swedish) is or even the British / South African English for it but I am not so used to US English. Thanks for contributing to my education
Enjoy your snow free winter.

Hello,
I think you are the new owners of my dad's old boat.
He set sail single-handedly from Sequim, Wash., shortly after I had graduated high school and moved away for college, finally having the chance to start off on his life-long dream of sailing around the world. He slowly made his way down the coast, stopping for awhile in his home town of Coos Bay, Ore. Unfortunately, he only made it as far as San Diego and was stopped by a medical condition. He passed away on April 8, and I was doing some Googling trying to find someone's old blog about sailing with him for one leg of the journey, and came across this posting.
I just wanted to let you know how happy I am that his old boat is finally getting some wind in her sails again. It was very painful to have to sell her after my dad became paraplegic, and I have often wondered about the outcome. I hope you are able to enjoy her as much as my dad did.
All the best,
Andi
