We're new to this forum so hi to everyone! We just "retired" back in March 08 and initially went south towards FL. We didn't have good weather which forced us to the the ICW (ick) all the way to Thunderbolt, GA where we turned around and came home. We left 8 weeks ago for the Chesapeake and that was WONDERFUL - lots of anchorages, met great cruising couples, etc. Now we're home again and the age old discussion is rearing it's ugly head on whether or not our Hunter 420 will be strong enough to take to the Caribbean. I think her shoal draft makes a perfect vessel, but my boyfriend isn't feeling secure. We have color GPS/Chartplotter, Auto Pilot, EPIRB and solar panels but no life raft or SSB. Before we make a commitment to spend any more money on her, does anybody have any personal experience with a Hunter 420? Our achilles heel is definitely our refrigeration which must be defrosted about every 2-3 days due to excessive frost build up. We've put new seals on the doors, but that didn't help much. Thanks!

Hunters take a knocking, but you see them everywhere. You can take a bathtub just about anywhere if the skipper is capable...................................

I am sure the 420 will get you safely to the Caribbean although it is not an easy passage south and you must be prepared for the possibility of several days of hard beating against the prevailing winds and current. Have you considered your route carefully....out towards Bermuda and turn right...or.....down through the Bahama chain, sounds nice, but not easy.

Frosting or freezing up is usually a sign of low freon. I am not a refrigeration guy, but I would ask a refrigeration guy to have a look!
