Hi Everyone,

My name is Jim I live in Perth Western Australia. I am planning together with my brother in law , who lives in London, to buy a boat in the UK next year and sail to Aus. I would appreciate any advice on the best time to cross the Atlantic. I understand there is quite a fleet of cruisers going across every year.

Why buy in the UK? I believe it's one of the most expensive places inn the world to buy a boat.

I live in the UK and I would most definitely seek to purchase outside the UK if I was looking for a boat.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply, we plan to go via France Spain Portugal Canaries, across the Atlantic,Panama canal. We haven't yet finalized our route across the Pacific we are still working on timing with the seasons etc. Thanks for the info on the arc rally, that looks like a very good way to do it.

Jim

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your reply. We were looking at ads for second hand boats around 35 ft up to 40,000 pounds and there seemed to be a lot to choose from. Where would you suggest a better deal could be found?

Hi Jim

A few of the places I've come acoss

States, Gibralter, Med (Marmaris), Virgin Islands (St Thomas), Guatamala........

many of these seem to have reasonable boats at 30-40% less than you would pay in the UK and often fitted out for blue water sailing - most of the boays in the UK would require substantial upgrading for serious cruising.

Welcome, Jim,

Agree about boat pricing. Better deals on well-outfitted cruising vessels this side of the pond

Have fun boat shopping and planning your trip!

Thanks for your reply, and for your (and Yoda's) philosophy.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this too, so hopefully you'll excuse me if this is a silly question - but if Jim is bringing his dream boat from either the UK, or the USA (which should give a big saving) for example, but is living in Australia - then is there an import tax due on the value of the vessel, when he arrives in Perth?

I know how governments just love taxes....

Thanks Lighthouse!

I've just been having a look at websites in the US, and seen my dream-boat for an amazingly cheap amount, and in my utopian dream-world, am nearly tempted to jump on a plane to Cali and go buy it!

But I've had to reel myself in and grasp the reality that I need a lot more experience before I can attempt the return journey across the Pacific... And I'll wait for the Aussie dollar to get back some strength too!

(patience isn't one of my virtues, but will have to hang on a few years I think!)

John,

As an expat now resident in the EU I envy the plan.

But please but do not forget the import duty into Oz - it was relatively high years back when we researched the same subject.

Hence buying an Oz registered yacht already in Europe (lots do end up in the Med) is also an option to consider.

I would not disagree the USA might be a good place of a lower priced bargain - but I assume part of the reason for this trip is to see lots on the way?

If you start off half way over - as opposed to spending time exploring the European Atlantci coast and then the Med - you'll stand to miss out on a lot of interesting places. Go peek at our log - we've spent the past four summers in the Med.

Good luck with the plan and the trip.

JOHN

Oz customs webpage has details on "self import of yachts" currently 5% duty and then 10% gst on top of that, base point is amount paid when purchased.

Of course officer. It was the boat show special - $500 for a fifty footer.
