Howdy,

Just signed to this forum and am looking forward to read the threads and learn a lot.

I got a Roughwater 33 a few months back and plan on refitting it before going cruising.

The boat is on the hard in Napa at the moment and I plan to do hull work before launching her.

I've sailed the Bay (and out on the ocean a few times) for a few years with a previous boat so I am not very experienced.

It will be a process of learning all I can about refitting the boat and navigation. Looking forward to it although a bit humbled by the task ahead.

Boeland

Ed Monk's designs are respected worldwide - how many hours has the engine ?

Looking forward to photos and details of the projects planned.

Richard

Oh, I heard the Ed Monk...and went looking...seems that 33 was not a Monk, though?

Here's a link to the boat type http://www.roughwater.com/default.aspx?s=c...t&v=33.html

Can't wait to hear more about your boat, your plans, your projects and sailing!

Fair winds,

Brenda

Thank you all for your welcome.

Brenda is correct, the Roughwater33 is a Gilmer design. Strong boat with modified full keel, cutter rigged, double ender, and a small cockpit. The engine is a Yanmar and I think it go about 3000 hrs but runs like a charm. The boat looks exactly like the one on the link Brenda provided.

Here are other links for the same model:

This is a picture of the boat before it was mine.

This boat already has circumnavigated and it may do it again with me. We'll see how it goes!

Currently I am in Europe but as soon as I can get back to the Bay Area I'll continue working on it. I started checking and repairing the through hulls, and need to re-pack the stuffing box, and paint the bottom and hull. I may launch her after this but I am not sure yet as I'd also like to strip the teak deck that is worn out and replace it with epoxied plywood and painted over.

As you know you start on a project that seems quite straight forward and end up redoing all kinds of stuff around it.

Speak to you later!

Fair winds

Oh, nice! Where in Napa are you working on the boat? In 2006 we looked at a lovely, but needing lots more work, wooden ketch at a boatyard in the Napa area. Seems like a good area to work on the boat (compared to here in San Diego, that is).

It is in the Napa Valley Marina. Very friendly people and the rates are decent for dry storage where you can't "really" work on the boat. Nevertheless everyone works on the interior or decks of their boats as long as they don't use power sanders or do painting or other nasty jobs. For doing dirty work the boat has to be moved to another location in the marina and the rates are quite higher.

Unfortunately this marina is a bit far for me to use it efficiently as I have to drive at commute time from the East Bay to Napa so I generally work only on week-ends and sleep in the boat. After I am done with the hull work I'll move to the Berkeley marina which will be a very handy location for me and work at the berth.
