Is there anything you miss? Yep - it's another one of the dirt-dweller's topics! Stop your groaning - you know you like seeing my questions come up

So anyways - is there anything that you liveaboards, or long term cruisers miss about your life on land? I've heard plenty about what makes life on board great. And it stokes my desire to shorten my timeframe dramatically. But I wonder if there's anything you miss about living on land?

A place to park my car. My boat stays at anchor and finding a place to park, especially overnight, is a pain.

Yes, when I am cruising I occasionally do miss you securely my house on land is anchored. It never drags.

I am very happy sitting in front of my fire place at home on firm land right now. It is more of a temporal thing I hope. As soon as the Spring comes around I might go out again.

Canyons, mountain trails, deep and dark forests, snow fields and rock formations in the desert. These bring a lot

more variety and experiences with them than many sailors care to admit.

These are reasons to sail in a variety of climates and geo-locations and to explore the land once you've gotten there! I've never understood the endless fascination with tropical island after tropical island instead of variety.

Have you cruised in the Sea of Cortez (Mexico)? There, you will find very pretty and dramatic rock formations as well as some nice hiking trails among them. The Cruiserlog member, Chrokeva, has posted some pics on their blog of hiking trails into the rocky desert landscape of the Sea. http://chrokeva.blogspot.com/

Where have you cruised? I would certainly miss the things that you mention, myself.

I've sailed down to PV from SF but did not spend much time in the Sea of Cortez. Did a land-cruise (VW-Westfalia van) from

Miami to Chile and Argentina mostly along the Andes. Stunning scenery. The Paria canyon and Coyote buttes were also

geologically exiting rocky places, as is Death Valley.

Oceans are "now" or "the last storm", rock speaks to me in eons. Like finding an ammonite or trilobite in a used-to-be ocean

desert, or on Brighton beach in England.

Too many palms and maitais do get repetitive, I agree. Variety provides the spice for life.

I just have a yellow oily stain on the shelf where the last block of cheese dissolved.

Engle fridges...expensive but very low power draw and worth every amp ....

I have a eutectic here, will get that going eventually. It ran off the engine so will need a 12v compressor fitted. Low priority for now.

A few of the really important ones in no particular order.
1)I miss being able to get food delivered. A few too many and a hot pizza delivered to the door (even in a marina) was always appreciated.
2)A washing machine, but that's easily fixed with money.
3)Pushing a handle on the toilet for a second and having all that mess disappear. Forever.
4)jumping into the car for a drive in the country; island buses are just not the same.
5) the weather channel.
6) a taxi when the wind tops 50 so I can go to a hotel until things calm down again.
Mind you, I haven't lived ashore for more than a few months at a time, very occasionally, since 1969.
