I just visited Rico Pan Salvadoreno, an awesome bakery in San Francisco. We purchased a loaf of what looked like a pound cake called Torta Alemana. We were very interested since it had no butter, milk, or other milk-based dairy products (such as whey) listed on the ingredients since my husband cannot eat anything milk-derived. The stuff is really tasty. Does anyone have a recipe for it? I googled but see things not in English

"Torta Alemana" litterally means "German Cake". I'm suspecting a Black Forest Torte or something akin to it. I've seen Black Forest cakes done around here with no dairy ingredients for those with lactose intolerances or similar (also avalalble in a dairy free version from Kosher bakeries for having with "meat" meals) although the original from Bavaria or similar would be heavy in cream and other dairy products.

Now I have to go look up recipes for such German cakes. Always thought black forest cake was a chocolate cake! Shows what I know. Thanks for your info.

Here's a start for you. Lactose free birthday cakes

I like Recipes.com, I've found some really great recipes there.
