Following a link provided by Trim 50, I came upon a book by Peter Compton entitled Troubleshooting Marine Diesels. I received it this week and can now declare it a 'must have'.

It should be called 'An Idiot's Guide to Checkin' an' Fixin' Deezul Motors'. I come from a background of clean fingernails, and this book is the best I have seen for describing problems and suggesting remedies.

Five stars!!

David

Dave,

Explain how one comes from a background of clean fingernails LMAO!

I got my start working on diesel engines when I was 15y/o. My best friend's family owned a truck stop in Tucson, Arizona where I worked two 12 hour shifts on the weekends while I was in high school to pay for my motorcycle habit.

I recall ever so clearly the very moment that I realized that I needed to get a college education. It involved changing tires on a cattle truck which at the time was full of cattle. As such, I can claim that I received my first golden shower at the young age of 15.

And I thought dirty fingernails were bad enough!

"Marine Diesel Engines" by Nigel Calder is also a good one. Takes anyone from a complete novice to a good understanding of diesel engines, in an easy to read guide.
