We live in Western Australia. cruising yachts are very limiting over here.

have found one we like in Sydney but would like to sail it back to Western Australia under the bottom prefered, have you any experience with this?

Obviously it can be done, the are passages across the bight where there are literally no anchorages for shelter or repair. The time of the year relative to wind and current is a determiner. Another major factor is the engine/fuel consumption/tankage of the boat === what range on engine against the wind and current ?

What is the Boat ? its full specs? and the Crew's specs?

HI anything under 15 Metres would need to go around the top,

We moved a 25 metre yacht from Sydney to Freemantle ONCE never again big seas, big winds, lots of motoring, very cold not pleasant not a happy crew in the end. this was after 2 attempts best read up on weather, experiences of others, there is nowhere to hide just plain hard work any time of year

Good Luck

The time taken is going to depend on how your style of cruising v speed of boat - but it must a concern for you to be considering such a trip and not able to make such a calculation yourself?

Dependent on season you'd expect fair winds up East coast and over the top, but headwinds down the WA coast. Suggest if 36 footer use average of 5 knots. If a real clunker use something less.

Then decide how you aim to complete the trip, ie sail non stop or day sail or a mixture and do the sums.

If sail 24/7 simply divi speed x 24 (maybe 125 miles) into total distance to get days the trip will take.

If day sailing then check out havens you wish to stop at allowing maybe 30 miles between each, and calculate the days needed that way.

Good luck but do not underestimate the tide and weather around that coastline.

Cheers

JOHN

John,

Would another option be to find a suitable boat on the North East coast of Queensland or even Darwin - to shorten the passage and cost - do you have any broker links we could suggest?

Found this one in Cairns which had a number of cruising sailboats :- HERE
