VETERAN English sailor Peter Turner will never forget the crashing sound when his yacht smashed into a reef near Willis Island, 420km east of Cairns.

At the risk of angering some people, I wish when a report says "veteran sailor" or "50 years' experience" that they would further explain this with just what was included in that 50 years of experience.

There's a world of difference between 50 years' experience and one year's experience repeated 50 times. I find it hard to believe that they hit an uncharted reef so close to Australia. Much more likely in my mind is they just didn't look far enough. The reefs there have claimed many an unwary ship.

I'm curious as to whether they were using paper charts or only an electronic chart plotter.

I note that it states, "Veteran English sailor" and not "English veteran sailor".

There is a world of difference. Any old Engishman leaving port could be described as the former wheras a much younger person with many years of sailing could fit the latter description.

Who would you rather see at the helm in a tight spot?

I found another news report from Sail-world.com, and they have a little chartlet that shows that he hit Moore Reef, a charted reef. He says his charts didn't show it. Right! Otherwise, it's pretty much a repeat of the news linked above.

http://www.sail-world.com/news_print....cfm?Nid=47214

I am a bit curious, though, that Yachting World magazine reported Asolare as entered into the ARC in 2004, yet both news reports indicate that the boat was launched in 2007. I wonder if there's some confusion with the start of the ARC World rally, which started November, 2007. Imagine, 2/3s of the way around the world in 9 months! Maybe they were just tired.

Addition: Take a look at this entry to their ARC World log: http://www.asolare.co.uk/arclog_page16.html

Before this, they had had two shackles fail. This time, "the lashing that attaches the top of the Genoa to the halyard failed" LASHING?! Not a splice? Oh, no!

(maybe I'm just cranky today)

There was another veteran sailor hit the reef a bit lower down as I recall. About 250 years ago roughly!
