I have managed to come under sail with a Swiss captain on an American boat who will be floating into Cuba in February. As an American I don't think I can get in there... Does anyone have any information or pointers on how this might be accomplished? I would love to see this country!

Thanks

Philip

From everybody I've spoken with, and what I've read on the Internet, there is no problem for a US citizen going into Cuba - from Cuba. A lot of trouble from the US - you are not allowed to spend any money there. From friends here in the US who went there by plane, via Canada, you will be welcomed, your money will be welcomed, and anything else you might wish to giv e or trade will be welcomed. Just don't let the US govt. know you're giving aid and comfort to the "enemy".

I understand that women's cosmetics, particularly lipstick, is a welcome gift or trade item. Actually, most consumer goods are in short supply. Lots of Canadians go there for vacation - it's cheap.

And beautiful.

Cuba is a political football right now under the present US administration. For political reasons the administration is going to extreme lengths to discourage any US citizens or boats from visiting the island. That doesn't mean that you cannot legally make the trip - it means that if the "feds" find out, you will be severely hassled legally and fined and everything the "feds" can throw at you. Bottom line, you will end up spending mega thousands of dollars defending your "rights" as a citizen. So the best advice now is to avoid the place when sailing on a US boat until the political climate shifts in a year or two.

I have been in Cuba a few years ago, with spanish flag, and I saw many americans and canadian boats moored there. The cuban authorities do not stamp your passport and no problem. I think everybody is welcome in La Habana. The problem could be that you need cash or a credit card of a not american bank. They do not accept this credit card because as they told me, the company does not refund the money because of the "embargo".

Chuck Baier wrote an article for Soundings magazine about sailing to Cuba. He's posted it on his blog at Cruising Cuba
