Hi Folks. This is my first post on this forum, so please bear with me!

We have 3 friends on a 40 ft Privilage cat. At this time they are nearing cape Palmas and making for the Benin port of Cotonou.Their eta would be about 10/12 days. We have found alarming reports of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and are asking if anybody has any up to date info or advice

Many thanks

Maybe the increasing spread of the piracy disease will finally push the rest of the world to pay better attention to the various problems that exist in Africa. Here is a recent report about West Africa piracy issues: West Africa: Joint Action against piracy

Thanks for that. It does not give any advice nor first hand knowledge. Sadly there have always been huge problems in Africa. I have heard many sugestions but this is the first time that I have heard someone advocate piracy as a means to hi-light african problems. Or have I misunderstood you. Sorry to be contentious.

Hello,

The piracy taking place in the gulf of Guinea is primarily inshore to Nigerian waters and next door Togo.

Unlike the Somali piracy, these pirates are not interested in the ship itself - Their M.O. has been to sometimes kidnap the crew and hold to ransom. At the same stealing anything they can carry.

Here is The IMB site which gives factual details on each incident C L I C K
