Is there a google earth overlay for the world cruising wiki?

This has been implemented for skipperguide (a similar German site) and it's great for passage planning!

Best regards,

Max

Many of the World Cruising Wiki pages have GoogleMaps embedded within the page. Also, coordinates are being added (many already done) in a format that when clicked, you are directed to a GeoHack page with various online geo resources related to the position/region.

See the SAMOS page as an example.

Just to clarify: I meant an overlay displayed ON google earth, not vice-versa!

I'll attach a screenshot for the skipperguide.de overlay to clarify.

Thanks for your attention

Easily done (a little time consuming) - who would like to tackle this interesting project for the Cruising Wiki?

I suppose the geotags for the places would be a requirement. How do you produce the KML?

GoogleEarth Apps. Geotags are already placed on most of the pages that have been edited & have info in the Wiki - a work in progress.

A duplication of the Wiki's menu really - a Google overlay would be a glorified menu (nice to look at though).

Is this the sort of overlay you mean:

That's what I meant, however I was referring to an interface to display these POIs within the google earth software.

Thanks for your attention

To do that I think that it would require cruisers to have Google Earth on their laptop and as we all know, it is very often difficult to get a decent connection to the Net when we are in strange places. So, the Cruising Wiki should not rely too heavily on a big piece of software like Google Earth, for sometimes slow, intermittent connections. IMHO.

For what it's worth, where systems and processes are concerned, I've always been in favour of defaulting to the future which would seem to offer much better availability of decent communications capabilities even in locations served realtively poorly at present.

I'm also pretty sure that many users here are not at sea and some will be in areas where good communications are already available and would allow relevant images to be saved or printed for when they're not.

Being a fan of Google Earth, an overlay system would, therefore, get my vote.

That all said, I've no idea how difficult a task it might be and am not faced with the realities of implementing such a feature. The nearest I've got to such a task is uploading my contact list from Outlook and I can't even remember how I did that - isn't age a dreadful thing!

Not a difficult task but it will be VERY time-consuming to get about 5,000 (currently) links posted to Google Earth.

It is in effect a duplication of the Cruising Wiki's menu and TOC but it is "prettier" to see and use.

I will make a start (regionally) and see how it goes. If anyone would like to assist, send me a PM.

The important exercise right now is to get the existing pages populated with information - ALL are most welcome to contribute information. Read the HELP page on the Wiki (L/H menu).

I don't think this has to be done manually, it should really be automated on the basis of geolocation tags, best put that in the template for new entries?

This is something that we should consider in adding to the Wiki Passage Template, that is a reference to a route in Google Earth.

I use Google Earth a lot when I am ashore but not when cruising, too slow and too expensive with my G3 connection. As a mater of fact, I keep downloaded a number CL Wiki pages to be viewed as needed off-line.

Cannot think of an automated tool to add way points on Google Earth, but this would be a very good future project. I might undertake it if no one has done so by then. But right now I agree with Lighthouse that our most important task is too populate our wiki pages (ports, islands, and passages) . Help here would be greatly appreciated.

As I said, I managed to add my Outlook contacts using some sort of import facility and my guess is that someone somewhere has a way to import Lat Long rather than postal addresses from something as simple as Excel or a CSV file.

What we need is a Google Earth expert - they must congregate in a forum somewhere - I'm sure that it'll all have been done already by someone somewhere!
