Default Antifoul for props

Just been reading the latest Cruising Helmsman and there is an interesting article on antifoul, particularly about prop coatings. There is some discussion of Propspeed and Propshield, but there is also reference to Feldten Prop & Drive Sealer. This seems much more affordable than the other options for coating a prop, but the question is, does it work.

So, has anyone had experience with this product?

When we left Australis II in Borneo in November we noticed that a lot of of other yachts in Kota Kinabalu had wrapped their props in thick black plastic bags. They all swore by it as a sure way to prevent coral growth if the boat was being left in the pen for a while. The idea is that with no light, no coral growth can occur.

By this stage we had locked Australis up and were on the jetty with all our bags packed ready to catch a cab to the airport to fly home. I figured we were not back aboard until mid Jan so it might be worth trying it out. To my good lady's horror I dropped my dacks, grabbed a bag and dived in with a couple of cable ties and a big black plastic shopping bag.

I'm going up there again next week so I'll let you know if it made any difference although if I do it again next time, I'll do it before we pack and lock everything up - a 9 hour flight back to Oz with damp jocks is not the most comfortable flying attire

Fair winds,

Mico/Australis

Yeah, I know about plastic bags for long term boat storage and I know about Propspeed and Propshield, but I remain interested in Feldten Prop & Drive Sealer, which comes in a spray can for under $30. I would still be interested in hearing from someone who has actually used it.

Ah well, in the absence of anyone else trying it, I laid out the money (not much) and my spray can of Feldten Marine Nano Extract Propeller and Drive Sealer arrived in the mail today. Watch this space (for about a year!) and I will eventually report back.

Just a note.... I painted my props with spray galvanize....99% zinc. 1 year later and they are still clean. A can runs about $5 US. I don't motor much so your results may vary but for $5 you might consider it an easy test.

For various reasons, we have slipped again after only 6 months. Despite a very inactive winter (we went off driving), our prop was quite clean (this in a marina full of mussels). I know its not much of a test, but I've just resprayed the prop with Feldten, so we will see how it goes over a longer period.

Thanks for the update - I'm following this thread with interest. At my next lift (in a month or two) I plan to try either Feldten or Galvanised spray paint.

Hi Karst
You might like to look at this discussion:
Prop Antifoul
Jonathon Neeves seems to be a bit further advanced than I am with his experiment.
