Default Hybrid petrol & electric motors for a cat

G’day
I’m wondering about when it’s time to replace the 9.9hp outboards on a Seawind 1000 cat, what are some of the many issues to be considered were I to replace one motor with a new 9.9hp outboard & the other with a similar sized electric outboard?
1) cost and installing the electric motor, batteries, control unit, wiring etc.
2) buy & fit more solar panels to charge batteries.
3) less range of the electric motor.
4) difficult to increase the electric motor’s range (unlike carrying jerry cans of petrol)

However, I like the idea of not burning fossil fuels EVERY time we motor, and cleaner, quieter motoring.
I like the idea of keeping one petrol outboard for reducing the overall cost & keeping a decent range.

I look forward to getting some other’s perspectives.
Cheers Johno G

Hi Johnno, The use of electric motors in lieu of using fossil fuel is very commendable. Soloman technologies are a great resource for anything to do with marine electric motors. All of your points are valid and the cost of a changeover could be prohibitive. I know a little about the Aussie company Seawind and, as a result, I would start my investigation with them. I feel sure they would give you some good advice given their commitment to the future of electric motors in their boats.

I think if it was my choice, I would go fully electric for both sides, but keep a petrol fired genny with a dedicated battery charger just in case the sun disappears for an extended period.

Please keep us informed about your decision. I imagine it is something that many yotties are considering.

Best wishes.
