changing wind vane instruments

Hi All,

Going to start simple as I know this one will get complicated fast!

I have had on my boat Raymarine St50 wind/depth/chart plotter which for the most part has been poor and not really to my taste. I have bitten the bullet and am replacing my stuff with B&G.

My question to be answered I hope is thus:
Can it be done or am I going to have to replace my current windvane cable or can it be cut and shunted at the instrument head and the top of the mast?

Not the definitive answer, but I believe you'll have to replace the cable. They most likely have different numbers of wires internally, and trying to solder on a new plug while swinging 12 metres in the air isn't what I'd call feasible (and I was an electronics engineer for 40 years!)

The best way and the most reliable is to change the cable with the one where your windex is compactible. I am pretty sure that after some months or more you will meet some problems because of the salt and all the weather conditions. It is dificcult to keep in good condition the new connections you will make up there as the cable is exposed of its shield even if you put insulating tape or anything like that. It may be more difficult but you know that it will work without problem.

Yeah, after seeing Del's setup I went with the MN100.

I haven't a clue of what you're talking about We have n older Airmar PB100 (or is it 150?) up at the masthead (weather station) and an Airmar Depth/Speed/Temp tranducer down below. Both give us NMEA0183 to the B&G radar/chart plotter quite nicely.
