Hello,

we are thinking about getting Furuno Fax30 for our Navtex and Wefax. Any comments?

Especially, what kind of antenna can we use with it. We will get the active coupler Fax5, but what is still little unclear, is what kind of antenna can we screw into the coupler. The price difference between whip antenna from furuno and others is quite large. Furuno web doesn't offer much information. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Petr

Hello Petr,

Your request requires so many questions to be asked to give you decent answers.

As you are in Hong Kong - suggest going to see this company in person, who will be able to give detailed information on Navtex frequencies and the appropriate antennas and other hardware. (By the way you can hookup a PC to display the downloaded data from 490/518 Kcs) They are the best source of Furuno equipment and accessories :--

Hello,

many thanks. Yes, I was going to write to them. But it's always nice to hear first hand experience, how well it really works, how reliable, quality of the data received etc. My original plan was to use SSB+PC as main wefax source, but the reliability is not 100%.

You can see Navtex schedules, times and frequencies for the area on the PC Navtex web site.

I wouldn't use an HF radio for NAVTEX, as unless you have it running all the time on the Navtex frequencies you will miss things like storm and security warnings, which are transmitted between the scheduled slots. If you want Navtex on yur PC then have a look at PC Navtex, which can be used with a range of Navtex receivers and receiving engines.

I have an old Furuno - 207 fax and I use a 23 ft whip SSB antenna mounted on the side railing. That leaves my backstay SSB antenna for the communications SSB radio. I would never have bought the Fax-207 but got it because a customer couldn't pay me for a job I did and gave me the old radio. That was 9 years ago and now the unit doesn't work because of years of paper dirt and other dirt getting inside.

The free JVComm software runs on your computer and all you do is plug in the output of a portable HF receiver or you SSB radio to the mic input and download the weather faxes onto your computer screen. Nice, neat, and simple.
