I am looking for peoples feedback on HD radar. I am planning to buy a system and was wondering if anyone knows if it is sensitive enough to pick up icebergs and if so to what size.
Also I would appreciate feedback on proven models.
If you want further information check out my expedition blog at

Thanks for your advice!

G'day to y'all. Welcome to our little group. There are many VERY experienced people in these 'forums', both in sailing & in life as a complete voyage. If your mistakes in 'posting' are an accident - then all is well; however if they are intentional (& only you will ever know) then that is not on - - ie ALL IS NOT GOOD. So let's move on, to the positive side - - I also am interested in - diesel o/b motors. I've been told by 4 diesel mechanics that they are very heavy, noisy, not very efficient on 'push-power' & in general these experienced marine mechanics, believe they are not cost effective. I have no personal experience however - I do trust them so at this time I'll not be going down that 'wave'.
However in another 'forum' in these pages, there has been a discussion about 'radar' & it's capacity to do it's job at a high level of efficiency. I wouldn't take my (or anyone else) word for it - - as it's your life - on the line, however having consulted with a professional marine electronics person who is a leader in this field & known to me personally with 40 years practice I've been advised the anything smaller than 6W of power with a range of 48 to 72 miles integrated to a top-shelf AIS is a short-cut that may cost you your life. Anything smaller doesn't have the 'power' to see through rain, hail, snow, fog & bad weather WHICH is when you need it the most. Smaller units also - do-not work if the vessel is not under way so anchor positions - can-not be checked again when you need it the most. Whilst the cost of $7 k seems a lot , my life is worth 100's of millions to me - the life of my crew - - even more & the lives of any number of people asked to risk theirs because I got it wrong is without an ability to comprehend in the billions of dollars & in pain to hundreds of family members. So go carefully & very well prepared, PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!! Hope this guides you in an informed direction. You'll need more than good luck - - you'll need a lot of 'great seamanship', so I wish you safe traveling. DO read carefully what MMNETSEA has said & take the courtesy to all of us - - & fill in the blanks. Lack of courtesy will not get you very far in these 'forums' or in the whole of life for that matter. Do take care, & Gawd speed. Ciao, james

Hi Exiles,
Unfortunately, I do not have time now to go into details regarding radar but will gladly do that later. However, just a quick question; are you talking about icebergs, growlers or bergy-bits? There are huge differences.
Cheers // Stephen
