I just got my new in-hull (not thru-hull) depth sounder and the instructions say I need to feel the base with 2.4fl oz of propylene glycol....

I did a google on this and there is a lot of info on it as a safe to handle/ingest product for many uses but no good source that I can find... the local hardware store doesn't have it and west marine (who delivered the transducer is another $30 cab ride away, if they even have it)... any one know of a product name for this stuff... or an alternate fluid to use in the depth sounder mount?

thanks

J

Propylene glycol is a component in newer automotive antifreezes

Otherwise use Glycerine or Glycerol (Like ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, glycerol dissolved in water disrupts hydrogen bonding between like molecules such that the mixture cannot form an effective crystal structure unless the temperature is lowered significantly. The minimum freezing point is at about 60-70% glycerol in water. Thus, glycerol has anti-freeze properties.)

I have used glycerine from from local chemist shop - successfully/

Done... I ended up just epoxying it to the hull... one local lady I was talking to about it said to just make a puddle of 5 minute epoxy and set the transuder in it.... easy enough... so I tried it and it works...

silly that they use something that you can't find at a marine store (I asked at west marine and they don't carry it) to mount a transducer... no chemist shops in the area I know of and I don't have an address at the moment to order stuff.
