I have an old Hood furler which is in excellent condition but missing the bottom fitting below the drum. I believe it was a Norseman type and connects the forestay through the drum to a turnbuckle. It measures just under 3/4" in dia and is a very coarse thread. I have tried to contact the manufaturers without success. These furlers were popular on 40-50 footers about 20 years ago. Any tips on what fitting and where i could get it would be gratefully appreciated

Hi Mav.

Was the missing part a Hood component or a Norseman ? Any photo's that could give further clues ?

Could the missing part be machined or another part modified ???

Hi Richard

The missing part is the Norseman I think. Check the photo

Hiya Mav,

Depending upon where you are at the moment - I'd go around to some large, old boatyards which have rigging shops.

I've seen many old Hood systems hanging from the rafters as these units are often swapped-out during refits.

Call around - I'm sure you'll find the part you need at a very reasonable price.

But - be sure to perform a dye penetrant test (at least) before trusting your life on it.

Happy hunting,

Kirk

Hi Mav,

Today - I stepped over an old Hood furler system in one of the six boatyards here in Trinidad. The unit appears complete.

If you have measurements (especially the clevis pin diameter) of the one you need and let me know, maybe I can wrangle a deal from the owner. There were several brands of furlers there... with weeds growing through them.

We'll be here a few more days and can send it from here or perhaps Panama in the coming weeks.

Let me know, okay.

To Life!

Kirk

Hi Mav,

Could I add to Kirk's need for measurements of the clevis pin diam ?

Could you get the diameter of the hole marked with the orange arrow - also which thread ?

You might try various bolts to see what fits - A good 316 threaded machine screw with a with lock-nut - would be a start to modifying a terminal.

I have one one those that I removed for a new system. All the parts are still available from Hood.
