There is a much larger presence of US Navy ships in the area because of the Iran crazies. Seeing so many grey ships with guns may have freaked out the pirates.

Default Zero piracy???

Guys

The real answer is that piracy is no quieter than it has been for over a year. things are just as busy as they have always been, a lot of what happens out there isn't reported, is downscaled or just plain ignored.

I work for a maritime security company, quite a small one in the scope of things and we have experienced three attacks throughout July, which whilst reported by us, have not been reported by the relevant bodies.

Whilst it is no doubt piracy in the region has appeared quieter it is largely due to both the weather in the region, making attacks by skiffs largely impossible, but also by the success that security companies have had, along with the navy, of deterring potential attacks. Pirates will then simply move their area of operation elsewhere. i.e. the Bab el Mandeb straits in the /Red Sea. Piracy on the Persian gulf is virtually non existent over the last 4 months, regularly smugglers coming out of and going into Iran are mistakenly taken for piracy attacks due to the high speeds these Ribs travel at. Again this is partly due to the weather conditions.

I am not advertising but would strongly advise you to avoid the region if possible or if not possible, secure your vessels or take extra protection.

Happy to share any intel with anyone on this forum if required.

I don't think these guys would be interested in recreational sailors, but they are a nasty bunch. Fortunately they have been caught.
