For those who remember the always diligent but often controversial Richard Donaldson-Alves who passed away in January 2012, I post this link in his honor. Richard was among other things, a scientist who worked in the Thai jungle studying tropical diseases, many of which are transmitted by mosquitoes.

Dengue fever was one of his areas of study. The Thai government has released details of a possible successful vaccine which has been developed and is almost ready for human trials.

Vaccine expected in five years - The Nation

Richard is fondly remembered and may soon be owed a debt of thanks by millions around the world. He was a medical doctor, professor, promoter of all things sailing and a founder of the Asia sail net, MMNETSEA.

PS. This warning from the past, from Richard, is even more noteworthy today as incidences of Dengue becomes more prevalent as time goes by.

Good on ya Mate.

Over 140,000 cases of dengue fever were reported in Thailand in 2013. It can kill, but rarely does unless the victim gets the worst strain (there are four strains now recognised) Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.

In my three plus years in Asia I managed to contract Denguetwice and confirm it places one in a dire situation. It is painful (it's called breakbone fever for a good reason) and can take months to fully recover.

Thanks to the dedication of people such as Richard Donalsdon-Alves (MMNETSEA) this may soon be a thing of the past.

Thank you Auzzee for the information and a reminder of Richard's life endeavors.

I personally miss Richard's contributions to the Cruiserlog site and believe others must sorely miss his contributions to the other communities he was involved with.

We're lucky to have enjoyed Richard here.
