Default Sailing Northern Pacific

We are planning to sail from Australia (queensland) to Canada via the pacific around June 2010. Is this a good time of year for this trip. We had planned on stopping in Fiji till a good weather window then making for Hawaii or maybe straight threw to British Columbia, Canada. We will be sailing with our two cats on board. We have heard some stories of not being allowed into Hawaii with animals. Is this true? Can anyone help us with any relevent information? Is there anyone else out there planning a similar trip, would love to hear from you. Cheers!!!

I am scheduled to to making a delivery from Maui to Vancouver in late July.

Not sure about animals.

The biggest impediment you will face is likely the Pacific high. It will probably sit in the direct path from Hawaii to BC. Powering through it can be problematic as this the also the location of the Pacific gyre which collects a lot of garbage. In 2000 we hit a small piece of fishing net while under power - goodbye transmission. Sailing around the high can take you as far as the Aleutians. El Nino will affect the high so it will require monitoring.

Thankyou for the info. We have heard stories about this gyre and its junk. If you see a bright orange ketch out there while you are delivering give us a wave and a hello. Are the many boats that take this line or are we the only ones? Especially from the Australian end? Maybe more boats return from the pacific this way? We haven't found anyone else yet? Cheers

There will be some other boats departing Maui at about the same time. The boat I am scheduled to bring back is participating the the Victoria to Maui race. Any boats returning to Washington, BC and Oregon will be following a similar route. You can check the Vic-Maui web site at http://www.vicmaui.org/.

Oz -> Fiji -> Hawaii, is upwind nearly all the way. I hope your boat points high and you carry lots of fuel. That said, June sounds like a good time since it allows lots of time for weather windows to open up.

Last year we met some friends in Vanuatu, they were going from Lord Howe->Vanuatu->Fiji->Hawaii, they left Oz start of October, that was real late in the season and they got battered on the Fiji to Hawaii leg. In fact we didn't hear from them for three months, turned out they got hit by a storm, they lost their solar, their wind generator, was low on water and their motor had packed it in. They took shelter on a small isle for a month before making it in to Hawaii.
