Well my repower is inching ever closer to completion. But I'm having trouble deciding whether or not to convert the cable based stop on the engine to a solenoid based stop. The reason it's being considered is that the control panel I'm using is designed for a solenoid based diesel. It can monitor temp and oil and cut the engine if necessary.

I have had car engines overheat and self destruct and in many situations it does not take long for the needle to go from good to bad. This can save an engine. But I'm also a proponent of KISS. Solenoids are electrical devices and we all know how reliable they are over time in the marine environment.

In the end, if the solenoid fails it's just a quick trip below to disconnect and revert to manual operation. Of course if the cause of that is a complete electrical failure there's no restarting. So there is reassurance in knowing that the only thing that will stop the cable stop equipped engine is the cable, or lack of fuel/air/water.

I'm interested in what the salty old sea dogs here have to say on the subject, particularly which they think is safer.

Hello Chopwood, does the name mean you are in a cold climate?

Anyway, back to cable or solenoid diesel engine shutoff >>

Here is an interesting .pdf describing an invention to have a combo Cable/Solenoid system :

As long as you have an automatic shutdown for engine overheat (no cooling water) or a loud alarm. Then maybe a cable backing up the solenoid is the option to go with.

PS The HMG boats have such a history -- you sure have a nice boat:
