This summer I plan to head from Newport, RI to NYC, up the Hudson to the Erie/Oswego canals, go through the Great Lakes and end up in Milwaukee. From there I want to ship my Freedom 40/40 to the Sea of Cortez via truck and relaunch her in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.

Does anyone have any information regarding boat yards and marinas in the area?

Geoff,

If I were you I would consider shipping to Guymas instead of Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. You would have a MUCH better start to cruising the Sea of Cortez.

Water up there is thin and the tides are LARGE. The cruising is much better and nicer as you get to the middle of the Sea. From BLA (Bay of Los Angeles) down to La Paz on the Baja side is the nicest. The mainland side has a lot more storms and lightning.

You might want to look at our web pages for a lot of Sea of Cortez info.

Amen to that, brother!

The northern reaches of the Sea of Cortez are a bit sketchy. On the whole, though, it is a beautiful and wonderful place. On the peninsula side, San Felipe is nice but has huge tidal swings. They settle out by about San Luis Gonzaga, which is north of the Bay of La by about 80 miles. It is well worth visiting and has a nice anchorage.

Conception is a dream, Mulege, Loreto, La Paz, all a delight. Skip Cabo san Lucas unless you like drugs, whores, drinking to excess, and fishing.

And have fun!
