What's the verdict on a cracked/damaged fin keeled hull from a hard grounding. Are they repairable or is it toast.

What happened with the CSY you were looking at?

That CSY is in north MS. I'm guessing that it was on a lake. I'd have to pay to have it hauled to the ocean in addition to the repairs.

I'm still thinking but I'm not crazy about the walkover as a keeper. I'm waiting to hear from a surveyor in Memphis to try to get someone to take a look but it's not in a convenient location for sure.

I agree with Trim, the Valiant has suffered major structural damage and delamination to the keel area. Its not the damage that you can see its also damage that you can not see!

Don't do this! Lot's of major structural damage and she'll never see the ocean again. That's the bad news. The good news is she's probably worth every bit of the asking price in equipment. Sails, radar, engine (if not immersed), electronics, winch's, halyards, mast, etc. Somebody building a boat could save a lot of money by purchasing this.

Location says Florida but if she is in Mississippi, she's probably up the Mississippi river, easy sail down to the ocean, but she'll never do it.

I was asking about the Valiant out of curiosity, not really considering it. I'm from the GA coast and I've seen power boats repaired but never had a lot of experience with keel boats and that looked like significant damage. I was curious if that type of damage could be repaired in a keel boat. I origial thought that any repair would not be as strong as the original build.

Trim 50 was referring to a CSY 44. I'd found a damaged CSY for a salvage price that is in MS. It's in NE MS, not on the Mississippi river, looking at the map I think it was on a lake formed by a dam on the Tennessee river. It would have to be hauled ~500 miles to the gulf or 600+ to the east coast (~600 to Savannnah, close to 900 or more to Baltimore or points north) to get it to water, (I'm currently in Mass) and I'm guessing that you'd ahve to haul it to get to a yard that has ever seen a big keel boat to do maintenance and repairs.

I do transportation for a living, not boats, but trucking is currently running ~$3/mile with fuel surcharges. I'd guess with permits for over size, and escorts you'd be looking at easily $5/mile, probably more. Unstep mast, loading, unloading...

All in all that's gonna end up being close to 10K or more before you start any repairs and I still have not found a surveyor any where near there. (like I said above it's 500 miles from the ocean) Memphis is probably the best bet, but the one I tried to contact there is not responding.

My original post re: the CSYs was asking of the Gulfstar 44 was built as well as the CSY 44. Looks like gulfstar copied the walk through version of the boat after CSY went under. I'm really not interested in the WO unless it is a really good deal, which this boat appeared to be till I figured out where it was.

Trucking the CSY will probaboly run you $10K - $15K based on the quotes I had for my boat 3 years ago for about the same distance.
