Diesel Algae
I have heard that diesel feul will become contaminated with algae if left sit. How long does it take before algae will start to grow in a stagnant tank of diesel.

Is it ONLY stagnant diesel?

Can someone give the "tell all" on this issue?

I suppose that is what the primary and secondary filters are for?[?][?][?]

You must be reading my mind! Just an hour ago I send an email requesting permission from BP Australia to reprint two articles on Diesel fuel that specifically deal with this problem so that I could put them in my cruising dictionary ( Here are the links for everybody now so you don't have to wait for bureacrats to figure out whether their permission is going to allow me to makes scads of money, and if so, how they can get some of it. (sorry, that was VERY snide and totally uncalled-for - in this case.)

Diesel Fuel - Fungal Contamination (this deals specifically with diesel fuel used in boats)

Long Term Storage of Diesel Fuel (answer - 12 months or longer at 20 degrees C or LOWER, or 6-12 months at temps of 30* C or higher) - and more than just fungi or algae, read article carefully.

Those primary/secondary filters get to be quite expensive if you are using bad fuel.

Hehheh, sometimes I just gotta make an effort! You should see me with the out-a-state drivers!!>/biggrin.gif

I was watching a movie over this past weekend where the locals had a beautiful island paradise in the Keys and made the mistake of introducing some big biz goon to their precious jewel. I don't need to tell you the way the island paradise went after the dollar signs rang up in the eyes of this island newbie!

My wife and I are considering making a major life change and going windward and I have always feared the worst for the rest of the Islands like the Bahamas. Are there any concerns regarding free anchorages in the waters off of the Keys and the Bahamas?!? I have been following the logs of several cruisers, one in particular had stated, after being out island for so long, that things had taken a drastic change concerning these issues since he had been gone.

Perhaps this should be a new topic??
