Learning to Navigate

I just spent a week onboard a 32' keelboat learning the basics of sailing - very basic. Now I want to learn to navigate. I plan to be a solo sailor and won't have anyone aboard to "figure things out" with.

QUESTIONS:
How or what is the best way to learn to navigate (rivers and costal)?
What are the best "how to learn" navigation books?

Do I need a Class? Online? In person?

Where can I go to buy the best charts, and what should I look for when buying a chart?

What are the best apps for navigation?

What tips do you have about navigating?

I know. That's a lot! But I'm a quick study. Just no idea where to start. I'm 60, new to sailing, but taking every class I can find!

Lenovo T60 laptop, OpenCPN software (free) and a USB GPS dongle should get you started. Total cost about $200.00 for a basic but very asable system.

Local knowledge always supercedes maps so stay in one area and talk to people about the traps before going. Expand from there.

The theory of navigation is available in books, sailing club courses and online. There is, however, no substitute for doing it offshore. With a knowledgable someone who has a kindly spirit looking over your shoulder, you will learn more about practical navigation, both inshore and offshore, in a weekend than you will in a classroom for a month.

The best teacher is your own logic, for nav is logical and relatively simple when you have the tools in your hand.
