On land, we have become used to perfect toast. Evenly cooked, golden brown, crisp on the outer, warm and soft on the inside. On the boat I have tried the mesh toasters, the rack over a stainless base full of holes...a fork, the griller....nothing seems to produce good results.

I can make either toast that looks good, but is still cold inside; or toast which is nice inside but which has to be 'de-coked' before eating. Short of firing up the generator and using an electric toaster at a time of day when decent people don't want to destroy an anchorage's ambience with generator noise, has anyone discovered the secret to making perfect toast?

For the decadent ones who don't want to run the generator: Our inverter (1800 watts) runs our electric toaster. Granted, we have lots of batteries, but the toaster only goes for a very short period. Michael says that our toaster running for three minutes off the inverter uses approximately 75 watt hours. That's 8.5% of our battery capacity, which would be replenished by the solar panels in a little over 20 minutes--as long as we have good strong sunshine. For our particular inverter, that would be its max load.

I used to have a small stainless steel toaster - made by a friend. Shaped like the fly of a tent .

It was placed over the gas burner flame. The lower section was a heat diffuser plate and 1/2 inch above, a rack for the bread to sit while being toasted. Made perfect toast - needed watching.

I have also seen a commercial made one on another yacht ( different design) of much thinner material.

David, Are they still around ?????

I bought one like that, but I never made perfect toast with it. Probably my short attention span, because the fellow who recommended it to me also said it made perfect toast.

Hah! He didn't know me very well.>/biggrin.gif

I still don't make perfect, or even reasonable, toast, now that I've got a proper electric toaster. Perhaps it's my attitude that's the problem?

Most likely.

I use a "toaster" I got at REI (a camping store). You do have to hover over it and turn the toast mid-way through but it works fine. Won't work if you are easily distracted.

We've got one of those little plate and wire ones that does 4 slices at once. $4 at the local camping store. We started using it (on shore) after selling the house 18 months ago (sold the toaster too>/smile.gif ). The secret is to watch it and turn top-to-bottom as well as front-to-back on each slice at least once. Use tongs, of course. Gets crumbs on the stove top but actually makes great toast.

Just another thing that's "different"...>/blink.gif
